The Nigeria Police Force has notified the general public of the arrest of policemen who were seen in a trending video clip brutalizing an Okada rider around Ogundele Street, Oja Oba in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State on May 17th, 2023.
The spokesperson, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this on Wednesday, May 17th in a Twitter Space webinar organized by Premium Times.
In the video, three policemen were seen brutalizing an Okada man, identified as Al-Hassan Usman, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State. One of them was seen hitting a baton on the man and another pushed him away forcefully.
The victim tried to wrestle his bike with the policemen, thereby sustaining a severe head injury as blood was seen gushing out of his head.
While this happened, the third policeman rode away with the victim’s bike and the remaining two immediately left the scene of the incident in a tricycle.
In a statement by the Force spokesman, “They have been detained, I’m saying it now. I got the video of the Abule Egba incident on my WhatsApp from the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and when he sends material to me like that, I know what it means,” he said during the webinar.
He made it known that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, had already detained the men without even waiting for any order, saying the CP, being a thoroughbred officer, knew what to do.
“We don’t waste time when our men misbehave,” Adejobi added.
According to him, the Lagos police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, ought to have made their photos available to the public to confirm that the policemen had been detained, saying he was sure Hundeyin would do that any moment from now.
